Autogenics Here is an easily learned technique that will relieve stress. It is a method of relaxation which brings the body and mind back to a balanced, normal state. The learner does this by silently repeating a series of commands designed to make the body heavy, warm and calm. Learning those steps puts the learner into control of autonomic processes, those bodily activities that operate without conscious thought, such as heartbeat, blood pressure, digestion, muscle tension. Discovered and first used in Germany in 1932, it works effortlessly to dispel the symptoms of stress that are caused by the our accelerated life style and the threat of terror that surrounds us. A few years ago I made an audio tape teaching this technique. "After The Storm: Self Healing with Autogenic Training" presents four different segments of 20 minutes each that progressively lead the listener into deep relaxation, heaviness and warmth. It's a technique that can be used to relax, to fall asleep, to learn to meditate. Autogenics, while useful for anyone, is especially applicable for those people troubled with symptoms that have been identified as directly related to stress such as chronic headaches, back pain, asthma, addictive behaviors, insomnia, irritability and generalized anxiety. It can also be effective with other disorders: ulcers, spasms, gastritis, racing or irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure. Mastery of the training is invaluable in the reduction of emotional and psychological stress, and in helping prevent the onset of stress-related disease. Before September 11, it was estimated that 80% of people who walk into their doctor's office are there because of stress-related diseases, from heart attacks to arthritis to diabetes.
